Solid via

Is there such a part as a via where the hole is filled in. I guess this makes it not a via. I need to get some thermal temps from the top of the pcb to the bottom on a smd part.

Any thoughts will be entertained.

  • Open hole or not a via is a conductor between layers. If you cover the via with solder mask there will be tin in the hole but it will still conduct. In this situation you can also not use it as test point.
If you make an opening for the via in the solder mask it will be tinned. If the hole is large (>0.3 to 0.5 mm depending on method) it will still be a hole. Smaller the hole will be filled with tin.
There are also other methods to close the vias 100% regardless of size if needed.
